If you’re a businesswoman, a mum, a wife, and a woman who is already spinning more plates than a Cirque du Soleil act you’ve probably had one of those days (or weeks… or months) where your brain suddenly hits the brakes.
You know the moments I mean:
Your brain feels like mashed potatoes.
Your focus is split 30 ways before breakfast.
You’re tired before the day even starts… never mind 3 p.m. pickup.
And yet your business is still demanding full noise forward.
If that’s you, breathe. You’re not failing. You’re not losing your edge.
You’re simply in a low-capacity season, and in this chapter of your life, the rules of leadership look different.
This blog is based on Episode 84 of The Moxie Movement Podcast and if your brain, body, or bandwidth feel “off,” this might be the most important thing you read this week.
You’re Not Lazy. You’re Not Broken. You’re Not “Less Than.” It’s Physiology.
As women, our biology matters. Our cycles matter.
Pregnancy, early motherhood, perimenopause, menopause, and stressful life seasons these aren’t footnotes. They are entire chapters of our story.
Yet so many female entrepreneurs do exactly what I did for years:
✨ Push through pregnancy
✨ Push through newborn chaos
✨ Push through hormonal storms
✨ Push through moving countries, houses, and businesses
We’ve absorbed the message that if we were “stronger” or “more disciplined,” we wouldn’t feel this tired or foggy or drained.
But you are not tired because you’re lazy, you're tired because you’re human.
A hormonally complex, emotionally intelligent, wildly capable human navigating a season that is physiologically demanding.

Want Support Navigating Your Own Low-Capacity Season?
One of the biggest mindset traps I see in brilliant women is this:
We assume less capacity = less capability. But they are not the same thing.
Your brain fog does not erase your expertise. Your exhaustion does not erase your brilliance. Your slower pace does not erase your results.
Your capacity has shifted. Your capability has not.
You are still the same wildly competent woman even if your bandwidth is currently half of what it was two years ago.
And oh, do we try.
Most women I coach fall into the same pattern:
“I’ll just work after the kids go to sleep.”
“I’ll just wake up earlier.”
“I’ll smash it out this weekend.”
“I’ll just push a little harder.”
But you cannot:
❌ outrun your biology
❌ outwork hormonal shifts
❌ out-discipline a season that requires compassion
This isn’t a one-week dip in energy. Some chapters of perimenopause, postpartum, and caregiving seasons last years.
You need to build a business that fits this chapter, not the chapter you were in five years ago.
Your day isn’t just “productive” or “not productive.”
Women move through four distinct energy states, often within a single day:
1. High Energy Sharp, Decisive, Magnetic
Use this for:
- Strategy
- Decision-making
- Sales
- High-impact visibility
2. Maintenance Energy Steady, Capable
Use this for:
- Delivery
- Team check-ins
- Routine tasks
3. Low Energy Brain-Mashed-Potato Mode
Use this for:
- Admin
- Filing
- Documentation
- Tasks requiring zero creativity
Absolutely do not use this energy for:
❌ big decisions
❌ conflict
❌ innovation
4. Off Energy Non-Negotiable Rest
Big blocks.
Throughout the day.
Without guilt.
If you don’t schedule it, it won’t happen.
Stop fighting your energy cycles build around them.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: When your expectations don’t match your current capacity, your whole business feels it.
Your team feels the bottlenecks. Your clients feel the delays. Your family feels the tension. And you lean into the self-blame.
Setting realistic expectations isn’t lowering your standards. It’s leadership. It’s emotional regulation. It’s creating a business that can thrive even when you can’t operate at 150% anymore.
If you take nothing else from this blog, take this:
You need at least 8 hours of sleep. Non-negotiable.
And yes that includes you.
Even if you have babies.
Even if you think you “don’t need much sleep.”
Even if you’re used to pushing through.
A sleep-deprived brain functions like a mildly drunk brain. Your emotions, thinking, and decision-making all tank when you're not rested.
Rest during the day also matters. Scrolling is not rest. Stepping away, breathing, walking, and quiet time is rest. When you regulate your nervous system, your business rises with you.
You were never meant to run at full speed all the time. Leadership isn’t about the pace you keep. It’s about staying in the driver’s seat even if the car is in second gear for a while.
Your worth isn’t in your output. Your power is in your leadership. Your magic is in knowing when to pause with purpose.
And if your brain has hit the brakes lately? You’re becoming wiser.
If you’re reading this thinking:
“Oh my god… this is me. And I don’t know how to keep going like this.”
