Accountability Is Leadership: Why Your Team Isn’t the Problem,You Are

If You’re Not Holding Your Team Accountable, You Are the Problem

Yep. I said it. And before you throw something at the screen, hang with me for a red hot minute.

If you’re overwhelmed, knee-deep in chaos, constantly fixing things others should’ve done right the first time…

Then this loving butt kick is for you:

👉 If your team isn’t meeting the mark, the real problem might be you.
Before you panic or run away screaming, “I just want a break,” let’s talk about what’s really going on inside your business and why so many brilliant women like you end up burnt out, bitter, and busier than ever even when they’ve hired a team.

The Bottleneck No One Talks About (You’re Not Alone)

Coming off a powerful workshop with my clients, we mapped out every single role in their businesses. For many, it looked like this:

  • Name next to every single task.
  • Team members underutilised or constantly asking for help.
  • A business owner smack in the middle of every decision.

Sound familiar?

If your team doesn’t feel empowered to make decisions, can’t anticipate your needs, or you’re stuck re-doing work you already paid someone to do… chances are, you’ve stopped leading and started enabling a bad case of learned helplessness.

And I say this from lived experience. I’ve built businesses for 20+ years. I’ve cried over team messes, over-functioned until I broke down, and avoided hard conversations because it felt easier to just do it myself.

That wasn’t leadership. It was martyrdom.

Your Team Can’t Read Your Mind. That’s Your Job

Leadership Isn't About Doing It All. It’s About Making Sure It Gets Done Right

Let’s ditch the story that “common sense” and “initiative” are magic qualities your team should just have.
They’re not unicorns. They’re humans. They need:

✅ Clarity.
✅ Consistency.
✅ Daily feedback.

Not once a quarter. Not in indirect emails or messages. Not in your head while you silently rage.
Every. Damn. Day.

Here’s the formula that changes everything:

 🔁 5:1 Ratio — 5 praises to 1 fix.

“Hey, when you did X, it helped us get Y result. Thank you.”

“What would you need to do to bring this next task up to our standard?”

You don’t need a massive system to start. You just need courage and a commitment to communicate clearly.

Because here’s what happens when you don’t:

Your great team members leave.
You keep tolerating mediocrity.
Your customers feel it.
And you end up resentful and exhausted.

If you’re still doing everything, you don’t own a business.

You’re self-employed.

And while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not what you signed up for, is it?

You wanted freedom. Impact. Time with your kids. Sleep. Sex. Sanity.

You don’t get that by staying stuck in everyone’s lane. You get that by leading and that starts with accountability.

Ask yourself:

  • Does every team member know what “winning” looks like this week?
  • Is there a scoreboard for every role in your business?
  • Are you giving your team daily feedback, clear, kind, consistent?
  • Have you made your expectations as clear as your values?

If not, it’s time to clean up your leadership hygiene.

The Harsh Truth (with Love): Either Lead or Work Alone

Let me be blunt:

If you’re unwilling to hold your team accountable daily, it might be time to go back to flying solo.

Because leadership is not about being the nicest. It’s about being the clearest.

Accountability ≠ Criticism
Accountability = Clarity, Direction, Empowerment

And when you show up in that space? Your team will rise to meet you. And if they don’t? You lovingly show them the door. 💛
