Do you know what’s keeping so many of us stuck in our business journeys?
It’s that elusive thing we all think we need to move forward: confidence.
Here’s the bit we forgot to clarify. Confidence is not the starting point.
Confidence is the result. And if you’re waiting to feel confident before you take action in your business? You’re going to be waiting forever.
In Episode 62 of The Moxie Movement Podcast, we uncover why waiting for confidence is the exact thing holding you back.
You’re not going to wake up one day and magically have the “confidence” to run your business at full throttle. The confidence comes after you’ve done the work.
This is exactly what I’m teaching the beautiful overachievers I work with- moms who are building businesses that serve their lives, not take them over. You need to focus on competence, not confidence.
But Sarah, what’s the difference?
Great question! Let’s break it down.
Confidence Isn’t What You’re Missing- Competence Is
The Power of Self-Efficacy: Believe You Can Figure It Out
Confidence Doesn’t Just Show Up-It’s Earned
You’ve probably found yourself saying, “I’ll do [this thing] once I feel confident.”
Maybe it’s putting yourself out there with a video on Instagram.
Or maybe it’s having that uncomfortable conversation with a team member about their performance.
Or even launching that new product you’ve been dreaming about. You know it’s going to help people, but you’re just waiting for the “right” moment.
You don’t need confidence to do those things.
You need competence, which comes from doing the thing. Over and over again.
I didn’t wake up one day with the confidence to start my business. Hell no. I stumbled my way through starting and growing my business. It was messy. It was uncomfortable. But I kept doing it. And every time I did, I became more competent. That competence led to my confidence and eventually, I got good at it.
You get confident by putting in the reps. You get competent by practising, failing, and improving. That’s the secret sauce to not only feeling confident in your business but getting results.
When we’re in business, there’s always something new we have to figure out.
A new system.
A new marketing strategy.
A new client.
The list goes on.
Confidence doesn’t magically appear just because you’re facing a new challenge.
Competence? That comes from doing it. From testing things out. From learning what works and what doesn’t. That’s how you build the ability to show up consistently and with confidence.
If you’re expecting to feel 100% confident before taking the next step, you’re setting yourself up to stay stuck. You’ll never have enough confidence if you’re always waiting for the perfect moment.
The truth? You just need to take the first step, get uncomfortable, and then do it again. That’s how you build competence. That’s how you build the confidence to run your business without feeling like you’re constantly guessing.
Confidence is built on self-efficacy- your belief that you can figure things out. It’s knowing that you’ll get better with every step you take.
For example, I remember when I first started using software like Asana and Xero. I didn’t feel confident at first. I fumbled through it. But the more I used them, the more I learned their ins and outs. Eventually, I became competent at it, and my confidence followed.
In your business, it’s the same. Whether you’re learning how to manage your team, automate your marketing, or master your sales process, competence grows with experience. And that’s where your confidence comes from.
But here’s the catch: you won’t get there unless you actually start taking action. You won’t be able to have that confident conversation with your team member unless you start having those conversations. You won’t feel confident on video until you start showing up on video.
The more you do, the more competent you become- and the more confident you’ll feel in the process.
Here’s what I want you to take away from today’s podcast episode:
- Confidence is earned, not magically bestowed upon you.
- You build confidence by doing, over and over and over again.
- Stop waiting for the “perfect moment” or the “right feeling” to take action.
- Get the reps in. Build your competence. And watch your confidence follow.
