Overcoming Decision Fatigue: Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a ’Boss’

Overcoming Decision Fatigue: Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a ’Boss’

The Art of Letting Go: Embrace Having a Boss Even as a Business Owner

On our recent podcast episode we dove into the topic of bosses. The podcast episode is slightly contradictory to why you got into business, "Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a 'Boss". As entrepreneurs, we often dream of breaking free from our 9-to-5 jobs, wanting to be our own boss. But here's the twist: sometimes, being the ultimate decision-maker can be draining.

Decision-Making Fatigue: The Silent Culprit

Ever felt completely exhausted by day's end, not because of physical work, but simply due to the sheer number of decisions you've made? This is called Decision Making Fatigue. It's the result of making countless decisions, big and small, day in and day out.

Remember that study about parole boards? If you're the first case heard in the morning, your chances of getting parole are a whopping 70%. As the day progresses, those chances dwindle to almost nothing. Why? Decision fatigue. The safer choice becomes the default, not necessarily the right one.

The Solution: Finding Your "Boss"

 Wrapping Up...

Inviting Accountability Into Your Life

Now, I'm not saying we all go out and hire managers. Instead, find areas in your life where someone or something else can make decisions for you. Here's how I did it:

  • Physical Fitness: Instead of debating daily workouts, I joined a CrossFit gym. I just show up and follow instructions – no thinking required.
  • Meals: My household uses a meal subscription service. Meals arrive; we eat. Simple!
  • Work: My wonderful Kirsty handles my social media visuals. She directs; I follow. Likewise, Dolly manages our free resources and monthly workshops. Their guidance ensures I spend brain power where it truly matters.

We've also incorporated tools like the power hour. This means I decide my week's schedule in one go, then just follow the calendar. No pondering over "what's next?"

Here's a truth bomb: We often work harder for others than we do for ourselves. So, why not use that to our advantage? Get an accountability buddy or join a community that'll gently nudge you towards your goals. For me, it was my daughter, Scarlett, who reminded me of our upcoming Borneo trip to see the orangutans, linking it to my project's completion.

Remember, being an entrepreneur isn't about making ALL the decisions. It's about making the RIGHT ones. So, if you ever find yourself overwhelmed, consider reintroducing a "boss" into your life. It might just be the breath of fresh air you need!
